Sweep School donates to Cansa

The school on 4 Burger Street in Suideroord is now busy with its third and final fund-raiser for the year.

SWEEP (Salvation War plan Ending Enemy Possession) Academy and Sweep Kids Nursery handed over a donation to the Cancer Association of South African (Cansa) on November 1.

The handover took place at the Kardia Family Church neighbouring the school in Burger Street. Learners from the academy were present at the handover to listen to a talk delivered by CANSA representatives.

This fund-raiser marked the second one for the school. Earlier on in the year, the learners were encouraged to collect some donations for the Johannesburg SPCA. Landi Campher is the principal of the school and nursery and is also the pastor of the Sweep Kids Ministry, which takes place at Kardia Church on Sundays. She spoke of how she gets the organisation that the school collects donations for to come and speak to the children so they understand where their donations are going to.

Cansa representatives at the handover spoke to the children about cancer and how it affects all people of all ages. The children were also told about the Shavathon held every February and how it helps cancer patients.

A bit of background

HANDOVER: Principal of Sweep Academy, Landi Campher hands over the school’s donation to a Cansa representative.

Sweep Academy specialises in foundation phase education. Landi and her husband Lou both left their corporate jobs and started the nursery in 2011.

“We decided to become more community focused and the area we are in was just a dormant space. This is when our idea to start Sweep Academy started,” said Landi.

The nursery school started off with only 12 children in 2011 and now hosts about 100. The school also has a grade R, one, two and three class.

The New Redruth couple has been faithful members of Kardia Church for over 30 years and believes that Sweep Academy is not a business for them but it is a calling. They both share a calling to impact children and have a passion to help build up children from a young age.

Landi was a lecturer in fashion at a university and her husband is a graduate lawyer, legal adviser and was the managing director (MD) of many companies before becoming the congregation manager at Kardia Church.

The school is busy with its third fund-raiser for the year. Sweep Academy is collecting non-perishable foods for children’s homes. This will be handed out to the homes on December 10 at Kardia Church. The church will be hosting carols on that morning from 9am and thereafter will hand out the foods to the organisations which will be present.
