Christmas concert of note

Another year of success celebrated at Lusito.

THE Lusito Association recently held its Christmas concert for learners with cerebral palsy, learning disabilities, traumatic brain injury, down syndrome and other syndromes on November 26, which was a huge success as many attended to support the children as they performed on stage.

Family and friends attended the special concert by the special learners of The Lusito Association. There was a lunch for all as well as jumping castles for the children, food and drink stalls and lots of entertainment for the whole family for the whole day.

LOVELY: There were many gifts for sale and most of the items were made by the children.

About the school: The Lusito School

The Lusito School, located on South Road The Hill, started off as a small day-care centre and has developed into a fully-fledged school for children who are differently abled. Today, the school has more than 80 learners who come from South Africa and other parts of Africa. This school no longer offers a vital service solely to the Portuguese community, but supports differently abled people from all cultures and backgrounds.

LUNCH: Everyone relished a scrumptious meal.

The parents of the learners are offered invaluable support. They are kept up-to-date with their children’s progress and the educators are available for consultation and guidance. Presently the school cares for individuals with cerebral palsy, learning disabilities, traumatic brain injury, down syndrome and other syndromes.

The school has now been divided into two sections: the stimulation centre and the workshop.

FOR SALE: There were many gifts available for sale. All of them were made by the children.

A bit of background: Lusito Portuguese Association for the Challenged

The Lusito Association was established in 1979 by a group of Portuguese parents who found there was a need for a school for differently abled children within the Portuguese community. The Lusito Association started the first Lusito School under the auspices of the Mental Health Society of the Witwatersrand and has subsequently grown with the school.

BEST OF THE BEST: The beautiful stage which was set up for the children to perform on.

The Lusito Association is a non-profit organisation whose function is not only to manage and fund-raise, but to build and maintain the Lusito School. The best known fund-raising event is the Lusito Land Festival, which won the Leisure Options Reader’s Choice Award for Johannesburg’s best festival. All funds raised from these events go directly to the school.

BEST: The children performed on stage and afterwards lunch was served. There was also a Christmas tree put up in the hall.

The Association is comprised of an executive committee and an administrative committee who are committed to improving the lives of the differently abled.

SLIDE: There were many jumping castles for all the children to play on.

Their mission is to support the Lusito School to equip each learner as best possible for his or her passage through life.

RELAXED: It was a fun day for all. Children played on the jumping castles.
