THERE has been a vast increase recently in vehicle-related crimes in Johannesburg South. Motorists are advised not to sit for long periods while parked outside their driveways, in shopping centre car parks or public car parks.
- Be vigilant at all times and be aware of your surroundings.
- Mix up your routes on your GPS to throw off potential criminals who could be following you.
- Get an electric gate. Many hijackings happen when you arrive home. Electric gates can help you get in and out safely.
- If you are being followed by a car, drive to your nearest police station. Don’t go home.
- Keep enough space between your car and others to avoid being an easy target for hijackers.
- Get to know your neighbours and be aware of what vehicles they drive. This will help to identify any uncommon vehicles in your area.
- Adopt a search pattern radius to scout before approaching your home.
- Adjust your speed when approaching traffic lights so you do not have to come to a complete stop.
- Avoid eye contact if you are hijacked but try to remember specific features.
- Stay calm when confronted by a hijacker and don’t make any sudden movements.
- Don’t argue with the hijackers.
- Try to get away from the situation as soon as possible.
- Remember, your life is worth more than your car.
