ST Martin’s Preparatory School recently received a special visit from Ronnie Recycler (Mpact Recycling mascot), Yasmeen Adam (procurement representative from Mpact Recycling) and Prenita Reddi (Tammy Taylor Mrs South Africa Finalist).
Mpact Recycling is the leading paper recycler in South Africa and has partnered with the Mrs South Africa pageant, an empowerment programme for women, for the third consecutive year. Through the partnership with Mpact Recycling, the Top 25 Mrs South Africa finalists are required to visit their selected schools and communities to create awareness of and educate them on the importance of recycling and preserving the environment.
St Martin’s Prep is an independent school in the south of Johannesburg, which has long been passionate about recycling. This school always finds creative ways to involve their learners in recycling activities – from holding an upcycling art exhibition to building structures out of magazines. Two of Prenita’s children have recently enrolled at St Martin’s Prep.
“St Martin’s Prep is a school that has recycling entrenched in its ethos. When I attended the Upcycling Art Exhibition as a parent, I was astonished at the creative artwork learners had produced using only recycled items. I was even more impressed to learn that each year the school finds fun ways in which to promote recycling. This year each class was tasked with building a tower made out of used paper, newspapers, magazines and telephone directories. The Mpact team and I had the privilege of choosing the winning class, who had built the highest tower. It was a fun experience that definitely changed my perception about waste,” explained Prenita Reddi.
Did you know that the paper cartons used to package fruit juice, milk, iced tea, flavoured milk, wine, custard, and dry goods like muesli and pet food are recyclable? Recycling your used, empty cartons is easy and only requires you to remove or lift the cap, turn out the corners and flatten them. The flattened carton is now ready to be placed in your nearest Ronnie Bank.
St Martin’s Prep School would like to encourage more community members and businesses to play their part in saving the environment by donating all their unwanted paper, magazines, newspapers, cartons etc. to the school for recycling. They need your contribution to help them increase their recycling volumes on a continual basis.
