Learn to defend yourself

The CPF hosted its first two hour long class back in July which turned out to be successful and a great help to the CPF members.

MEMBERS of the Mondeor Community Policing Forum (CPF) Sector 2 gathered at Mondeor Police Station on Wednesday, September 20 for a second self-defence class, courtesy of martial arts master Warren Chong.

The CPF hosted its first two-hour-long class back in July which turned out to be successful and a great help to the CPF members. Chong teaches the CPF self-defence participants to work with tools or items that they should already have on them like a torch or pepper spray.

“The first course was to help the CPF get a basic understanding of self-defence and now the second one is to get a bigger group and help more people. I want to give back to the CPF as they are just members of the community who also need to defend themselves,” said Chong.

He said he hopes to have these classes with the CPF on a monthly basis to help up-skill the team to handle situations on the street. The classes are purely self-defence for a person on the street to protect him or herself. Classes also target females and young ladies especially so they can protect themselves and empower themselves.

BE AWARE: Part of Warren Chong’s lesson was teaching the CPF on being aware.

“Many people complain when things happen to them but people need to start being proactive and learn to defend themselves. The CPF faces realistic combat and dangerous situations and they also need to be able to keep themselves and their family safe,” explained Chong.

His classes teach everything on self-defence as well as self-control and fitness. He offers a free class to those who want to get a feel of how self-defence works. He emphasises the use of natural weapons which is one’s body. The quickest weapons will always be one’s hands.

Chong has a background of Chinese Kung Fu and created these classes, in the South, about a year ago especially to teach self-defence and fitness.

Chong lives in Meredale and has 15 years of martial arts experience and has been conducting these self-defence courses in and around Johannesburg for the past three years through his business called the Kaizen Martial Arts Association.

PROTECT: Members learn how to protect themselves in ever faced with a suspect or attacker.

Chong hosts his classes on a Monday and Wednesday in Winchester Hills and on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Kibler Park. His classes are from 6.30pm to 7.30pm. He will also be opening a Saturday class from 2pm to 3pm in Winchester Hills.

For more information or to get in touch with Chong, email him on kaizenmaa@gmail.com or call 079 889 8390.

SPACE: Warren Chong explained on the difference between personal space and intimate space and how to be alert of potential threats.
LEARNING: Members learnt various techniques and self-defence.
WEAPONS: Warren Chong explained how people can be hiding several items on themselves like he hid all the items in the picture on him. (Note: the gun is not real).
