Growing old but still going strong

Glenzicht Retirement Village hosts Olympics day for elderly

THE Glenzicht Retirement Village in Oakdene hosted an olympics day for many of the elderly on September 16.

READY: All the teams listen to Jack Kok as he explains the rules.

Six teams participated and they were allocated different colours. There were six people per team and three outside judges. Jack and Ann Kok, who has been in the village for about four years, organised the event. Ann spoke to the CHRONICLE saying that they hosted a similar event about two years ago and it was a great success, just like this one.

SUPPORTING: Jessica and Daniela Diab supporting their grandparents.

“Many residents requested that we do the olympics day again. We planned this for a few months and it’s simply wonderful to see so many elderly people take part. Many are very frail and are unable to even leave their homes but those who can move and take part all joined in the fun,” said Ann.

SPEED AND ACCURACY: In a relay activity, teams built towers from cans.

With various games for the teams to play, there was no shortage of fun and competition. There was a mini cricket game, walkies, card games, passing bottles and games with ping-pong balls. Afterwards, an award ceremony was held for the top three teams.

COMPETITION: Margaret Graham in the race to finish first.

Many families also joined in the fun day to spend time with their loved ones and support them.
