Murder victim’s identity confirmed by DNA tests

One of their maintenance staff members was said to have confessed to the murder.

POLICE have through DNA tests positively identified the charred remains of a man found in Benoni in July as the body of Hughes Dharampal. The murder plot thickens as police have also confirmed that Dharampal was a suspect who handed himself over to police recently.

Dharampal, a male aspirant work rider went missing on July 24.

A week later a cleaner of the race course came forward to confess to the murder.

The suspect, 34-year-old Alfred Matemane had appeared in court on July 31. He will remain in custody awaiting another court appearance on September 28.

The management of Phumelela Gaming confirmed the murdered Dharampal had been an employee of the race course.

The management issued a statement saying Matemane confessed to the gruesome body find.

Provincial police spokesperson, Brig Vishnu Naaidoo said Matemane was arrested and took police to the remains of the burnt body at an undisclosed location in Benoni. Matemane was arrested on July 28.

“Members of the National Crime Intelligence Unit provided Booysens SAPS with intelligence relating to a possible suspect.”

Matemane is facing a murder charge after appearing in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.
