Family still not satisfied with hospital’s conduct

On July 13 the family and the hospital’s representatives met in an effort to get clarity on some of the concerns the family had.

ALTHOUGH representatives of Helen Joseph Hospital kept their promise to meet with the family of the late Floris Visser (52), of Crown Gardens, his family is still not satisfied with the answers.

Visser was discharged from the hospital on June 1 but died suddenly at home on June 3.

The family had earlier blamed the hospital for what it claims was Visser’s ill treatment, as well as for his sudden death.

On July 13, the family and the hospital’s representatives met in an effort to get clarity on some of the family’s concerns.

ACHING: Mr Floris Visser’s swollen feet.

The family said they were informed that their father had a heart problem and his body was retaining water.

“We still believe he was sent home to die. I mean the man couldn’t move, eat, bathe or go to the bathroom by himself.

“He had swollen hands and feet, bedsores and strange lesions on the rest of his body, but nobody has offered an explanation. At one stage they refused to give him a bucket to urinate.

“Though we want to put this behind us and move on, it is still painful because we are not getting the full explanation,” said Mari, his daughter.

The CHRONICLE contacted the hospital again. This time, Lesemang Matuka, acting head of communications Gauteng Department of Health, said that because of doctor-patient confidentiality, the hospital could not divulge any information to the media about the patient’s condition or medical records.

“The family is welcome to come back to the hospital for further redress, if they are still not satisfied with the outcome of the meeting,” said Lesemang.
