Children are the future

“The future belongs to our children and as an organisation we strive to show them ways in which they can be the difference."

MISS Earth South Africa regional finalists played their part on Mandela Day with their theme #ActionAgainstPoverty, by adopting a school in partnership with City of Joburg, Pikitup and Tsogo Sun.

Their objective and vision for the initiative is to show children in a practical way, how #WasteStopsWithME could not only create an opportunity for them to act against poverty, but also create a business enterprise. Waste and poverty are critical issues and until these are addressed and solutions are found, poverty hinders the growth and economy of a country. “We want South Africans and those around the world to commit to long-term, regular projects that will tackle poverty,” says Sello Hatang, chief executive of the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

The Miss Earth South Africa partnered with the Tsogo Sun Entrepreneur Winner of the Year, Mr Nqobile Nkosi of NQ Jewellery, based in Mfolo, Soweto. The objective of the educational focused initiative was to allow the learners to create jewellery. The children were taught how to make earrings, bracelets and necklaces from recyclable items like bottle caps, cans and plastic.

“The future belongs to our children and as an organisation we strive to show them ways that they can be the difference. We seek to improve the environment and to change the way in which waste is seen while addressing the challenges of poverty at the same time. We are seeking ways to ignite action against poverty,” said Ella Bella, director of Miss Earth South Africa.
