Your views on road fatalities

The CHRONICLE took to the streets to ask residents what their views are on the rapidly increasing number of road fatalities on the weekend of July 8. Here are some of their responses.

RECKLESS DRIVERS: “There are many causes of road fatalities, one of which is reckless driving as well as the terrible state of our roads. Taxis are also a major cause of accidents. Drinking and driving is, however, the biggest killer. There is nothing being done lawfully to prevent such fatalities, especially on weekends.” Oeloff Hattingh.
“As daar nie iets nou daar omtrent gedoen word nie, hoe lyk ons toekoms?” Armin Duffey.
HORRIBLE: “The number of road fatalities is really high and this is a horrible reflection on our country.” Sibusiso Mthabele.
SHOCKING: “I observe the road a lot and I see many old people driving alone. Many go into cardiac arrest while behind the wheel. Because I sell produce at an intersection I see a lot of drunk people driving and many young people racing on weekends. The number of fatalities is shockingly high for just one weekend.” Oliva Sekati.
IT IS A DISGRACE: “The number of road fatalities are a disgrace to our country. People who should be taking care of the roads, like the traffic department, are not doing their jobs. There is too much corruption and many people are obtaining their driver’s licences illegally. Taxi drivers are the main culprits – they are completely lawless.” Braam Labuschagne.
ADVICE: “People must be more vigilant on the roads and should stick to the rules of the road. Drivers and passengers should wear seat belts at all times. Drivers must maintain a safe following distance and speed.” Herman Smit.
