Pastor writes about the righteous way to wealth

“In 2012 we were invited to assist pastors at the Hatfield Christian Church in the South of Johannesburg. For a while our services were held at the chapel at Thaba Eco Hotel but our congregation began to grow from 65 and soon it became apparent we needed a new church."

JAN van Reenen, pastor at Hatfield Christian Church Joburg South in the grounds of Thaba Eco Hotel, is launching his book, Power To Create Wealth, on May 7, at 6pm. The CHRONICLE chatted to Jan and his wife Katinka about their life in the ministry.

They met in Harrismith when he was sent to help in the local church there and Katinka lived on a farm in the area.

“We were married and lived in Bloemfontein for a while before spending two years in mission work in South East Asia and the Pacific, travelling around different countries. We stayed with local people while we were travelling, learning about their life and teaching the word of God, in ways they would understand. It was a very interesting time,” they said.

During this time Jan had two books published. One of them was read by a senior pastor at Hatfield Christian Church in Pretoria. “When we returned to South Africa we were called to minister there and stayed for seven years.

“In 2012 we were called to become the executive pastors at the Hatfield Christian Church Joburg South. For a while our services were held at the chapel at Thaba Eco Hotel but our congregation began to grow from 65 and soon it became apparent we needed a new church. We put up the marquee, which is now home to our 300-plus believers every Sunday. We have a morning service at 9.30am and in the evening we present discipleship training during school terms. These discipleship courses run over 10 weeks each and aims to equip people to find and fulfil their life purpose. During the week we meet in smaller groups. As we equip believers they become disciples who again can minister to others – so it’s not us ministering to the congregation,” added Jan.

Jan and Katinka, with their three children, Jabin (10), Daniel (7) and Lianelle (2), live in Glenvista and have grown to love the South. “We love our local church and its people and we love to see the people grow. We don’t see a move anytime soon – this is where we are planted and needed. The South’s people are friendly and down to earth. It’s a great place to live and minister.”

Jan believes the Lord led him to write Power To Create Wealth to share his beliefs with others. “I wrote the book to give others a solid Christian wealth plan they can live by.”
