City starts looking for new police chief

In terms of Section 64b (1) of the South African Police Service Act 68 of 1995, the recommended candidate must be a member of the JMPD.

THE City of Johannesburg Council has set the ball rolling to find a new chief for the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD).

At its extraordinary meeting on April 21, the council approved a process to immediately commence with the recruitment of a new JMPD chief to replace incumbent General Zwelibanzi Nyanda.

General Nyanda’s term expires on August 4.

The council approved that the position of the new JMPD chief be advertised with immediate effect to give the panel enough time to find a successor and to ensure that all relevant role players, including panel members and potential candidates, are available and that there is no delay in the process of selection, interviews and assessments.

Member for the Mayoral Committee for Public Safety, Clr Michael Sun, City Manager Dr Ndivhoniswani Lukhwareni and a third person, who is not a councillor or City staff member but has expertise or experience in policing matters, will form part of the selection panel.

The panel is constituted by at least three members but not more than five. The recruitment process is scheduled to be finalised in June and the successful candidate is expected to assume his or her duties on August 1 or as soon as possible thereafter.

In terms of Section 64b (1) of the South African Police Service Act 68 of 1995, the recommended candidate must be a member of the JMPD.
