Councillors create a culture of reading

He said it was a pleasure to see the joy in the eyes of the principal, librarian and learners.

WARD 55 councillor Rashieda Landis and Democratic Alliance (DA) Member of Parliament (MP) Manny de Freitas recently visited Die Fakkel High School and The Hill High School to donate books to their libraries.

Die Fakkel High School indicated that any donation of books would be most welcome.

“We took heed of this call and between Clr Landis and I we obtained books which we thought would be well utilised by the learners of Die Fakkel High School,” explained De Freitas.

He said it was a pleasure to see the joy in the eyes of the principal, Attie Botes, the librarian, Stepney Rust, and the learners when they saw the new books.

“We hope this will encourage more young people to read,” said De Freitas.

His next stop was The Hill High School, which De Freitas visited with ward 56 councillor Michael Crichton to meet with the principal, Sean Marques. “We were impressed at how Mr Marques has turned the school around from where it was previously. Already there has been an improvement in the matric results – they achieved 85 per cent last year which is up from 83 per cent in the previous year,” said De Freitas.

The MP and councillors also handed over books to their school library, commenting that it was a privilege to carry out small gestures which have a big impact on the country’s future leaders.
