Dogs Unite to help the blind

Your dog becomes the Superhero of the Day!

DOGS Unite, a five kilometre dog walk which takes place at Delta Park, Johannesburg, on April 23, is in celebration of International Guide Dog Day, which is on April 26, and will raise funds for the SA Guide Dog Association.

Juliette Powell, the Guide Dog Association’s head of marketing, explains that Dogs Unite aims to unite dogs of all shapes and sizes from across South Africa.

“By attending this event your dog will become a hero for the day, helping raise much needed funds and awareness for guide dogs, who are genuine heroes every day for their owners,” she said.

Did you know that it costs in excess of R100 000 to breed, raise and train a working dog?

The new owner of the guide or service dog pays a mere R5 for their dog and makes a contribution of R100 towards their stay at the training centre during formal training. The affordability ensures everyone who needs a guide dog can get one.

“As a token of appreciation to supporters of the walk, every furry fundraiser will receive its very own cape – an accessory a hero simply can’t be without – and a special doggy certificate.

“We urge everyone to get involved by finding an event in their area and transforming the everyday dog walk into something extraordinary,” Powell said.

Getting involved is easy! Simply register online to walk with the heroes. You could become a hero yourself by getting friends and family to sponsor you as you do the walk.

Participants are also encouraged to share their stories through the event’s official Facebook page, Dogs Unite SA, and @DogsUniteSA on Twitter.
