Traffic lights to be improved
This has been made possible through City’s recent budget adjustment – allocating R6 million to replace cabling at traffic intersections as part of the City’s ‘No Joint’ Policy.
IN cooperation with Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA), the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) will implement interventions combating the challenge of traffic signal downtime at key traffic intersections throughout Joburg.
On Wednesday, March 15, executive mayor of the City of Johannesburg Clr Herman Mashaba said that this has been made possible through the city’s recent budget adjustment, where R6 million was allocated to the replacement of cabling at traffic intersections as part of the city’s “no joint” policy.
Clr Mashaba explained that until now downed traffic lights have been rectified by simply joining cables in the event of an electrical fault. “Each joint in the cabling of a traffic light is an electrical weakness, making it vulnerable to rain, electric surges and lightening. The ‘no joint’ cable policy will reduce the high number of electrical faults for the most critical high-volume intersections in the city.
“Starting with key intersections, JRA technicians will replace the damaged cable with new cable. The city’s ultimate goal is to progressively roll out this ‘no joint’ policy on a city-wide scale, beginning in the city’s 2017/18 financial year.
“By doing this, we will make Joburg’s traffic network more resilient to the impact of wet weather conditions, lightning and electrical surges, which contribute to signal downtime.”
He reiterated that the importance of improving the city’s traffic network cannot be overestimated. Joburg’s 2 135 signalised traffic intersections are vital to achieving the city’s target of five per cent economic growth, providing much-needed opportunities for the residents.
