Spay campaign well supported

Sister Cindy Price, AACL’s general manager, said this year it had been decided to give back to welfare clients who had supported them through many changes over the past few years.

THE Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL) is pleased to report back on the success of its 2017 World Spay Day campaign.

Sister Cindy Price, AACL’s general manager, said this year it had been decided to give back to welfare clients who had supported them through many changes over the past few years. Dr Kathryn Knipe, principal veterinarian and campaign coordinator, had initially set a goal of 40 sterilisations to be undertaken on World Spay Day, Tuesday, February 28. However, due to the overwhelming response from clients, these 40 slots were soon filled.

“So, with the help of a locum veterinarian and six compulsory community service veterinarians, we extended the World Spay Day campaign over four days, performing 14 sterilisations on Thursday, February 16, 21 on Friday, February 17 – when we sadly had a cat die post operation – 34 on February 28 and 24 sterilisations on Wednesday, March 1.

THE WORLD SPAY DAY 2017 TEAM: The team that worked tirelessly to ensure that everything went smoothly at the AACL.

In total, 93 animals were sterilised during our campaign, preventing hundreds of unwanted animals from being born. The sterilisations were performed on 35 dogs, 24 dogs were castrated, 17 cats spayed and 17 cats castrated,” explained Price.

She complimented and thanked AACL’s dedicated team of veterinarians, veterinary nurses, animal welfare assistants, orderlies and reception staff for ensuring that everything ran smoothly during the campaign. Price also thanked the locum vet and the six compulsory community service veterinarians who had assisted in the process, as well as the clients, whose loyalty to the organisation is highly appreciated, she said.
