Joburg re-integrates services

SAMWU welcomes the call to re-integrate municipal entities back into the city.

ON TUESDAY, February 7, hundreds of municipal workers came to witness the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) welcome the announcement to re-integrate municipal entities such as City Power, City Parks, Johannesburg Water and JRA back into the city.

The union believes that this move will eliminate corruption, exploitation and enable more efficient service delivery.

According to SAMWU, these entities are now running at far lower staff complements than when they were created and have focussed on making profits and cutting jobs instead of improving the living standards of people. This, says the union, was what caused strikes and other problems as outsourcing and subcontracting increased.

After the announcement of the re-integration of municipal entities, upbeat municipal workers sang songs outside the Devonshire Hotel in Braamfontein, where the media conference had taken place.

The Mayor later announced to the media: “I am delighted by the workers’ choice to support the Council’s recent decision to reintegrate Municipal Owned Entities (MOEs) such as City Power, Joburg Water and Pikitup back into the City. This reintegration process is a victory for workers and residents alike. [The] support by workers demonstrates their support for a service delivery model which will improve service quality and accountability and supports our fight against corruption.”
