WEEKEND crime prevention operations held in Gauteng on the weekend of January 28 culminated in 2 871 arrests and the loss of a CPF member.
The provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Deliwe de Lange and the management of the police in Gauteng are saddened by the death of a Community Police Forum member who died after a shoot-out between the police and a group of suspects during a business robbery in Nigel during the operation. A police constable was shot during the incident and sustained minor injuries, one suspect was fatally shot and another suspect escaped and is still at large.
In the meantime, crime prevention operations across the province saw 2 871 suspects apprehended for various crimes, with almost 800 arrests in Ekurhuleni, 430 in Tshwane and about 337 in Soweto.
During these operations, 22 unlicensed firearms were recovered, 56 illegal liquor outlets closed down and liquor was confiscated. One hundred and eighty suspects were arrested for possession of dagga. In the West Rand cluster, 221 suspects were arrested in roadblocks and other operations.
The suspects arrested in Tshwane North include three accused of murdering a 61-year old man who was killed on December 31, 2016 in Bosplaas, Hamaanskraal.
Four were arrested for arson and public violence in Moeka Village in Temba, on Saturday night, January 28.
Fifty-seven were arrested by police in Soweto for possession of stolen motor vehicles and 126 for rape, murder, theft and malicious damage to property.
All arrested suspects appeared before different magistrates’ courts in Gauteng on Monday, January 30.
