Boxers help out the needy

Walking Tall a feeding scheme at Southern Suburbs recreation Centre.

THE boxing fraternity is walking tall in the Southern Suburbs, having established a feeding scheme for those in need of food and clothing.

The Walking Tall feeding scheme was initiated by well-known AfricanRing boxing promoter Jeff Ellis Senior and his wife Marie along with well-known boxing photographer Nick Lourens and his wife, Janice Lourens, and many professional and amateur boxers in the South.

Anton Gilmore and his team of boxers at the Box Office, where the feeding scheme will run once a week on a Wednesday from 12:00 until 14:00, have also come on board. Former world boxing champion Brian Mitchell has also brought his expertise to bear on getting Walking Tall off the ground.

The scheme kicked off on Wednesday, February 1, at the Southern Suburbs Recreation Centre, where about 50 destitute people from the South received a warm meal.

Manager Jeff Ellis Junior from Right Click Media distributed food buckets.

“We want this to grow and become a scheme that will look after our people who need food and clothes,” said Jeff Ellis Senior. “My wife is the main pillar behind this initiative and, of course, she can’t do it on her own. We want to thank all involved in the Walking Tall scheme.”

The scheme will also encourage street children to clean up the corners where they stand so that they can become an integral part of the community. Walking Tall will follow this up with weekly sessions aimed at providing them with skills and giving them a meal.

The councillors of wards 56 and 55 will be the backbone of this initiative at Southern Suburbs Recreation Centre.

Ward 56 councillor Michael Crichton said: “I think that this is an absolutely wonderful initiative as it encourages these children to take pride in the area in which they live. One often finds that crime lessens when an area is clean, and this also encourages them to let us know if they see anyone dumping illegally.”

Ward 55 councillor Rashieda Landis was very pleased to attend the launch of this initiative. Clr Landis said: “Well done to everyone involved with this project. This is really going to assist in making our community a better place.”

Clr Landis added that it’s never too late to start something new and this gives them that platform.

The community can get involved by supplying food or clothes or anything that will distributed to the destitute and needy people at the centre. To obtain more information, please contact Jeff Ellis on 078 457 3030 or go directly to the Southern Suburbs Recreation Centre Box Office.
