SPCA outreach team is back

The Outreach Programme assists owners with information about how to care for their animals properly, and emphasises on the need for sterilisation.

JOHANNESBURG SPCA is proud to announce the relaunch of a dedicated outreach team, headed by Dr Moragh Puttick and supported by the dedicated inspectors.

The JSPCAs Outreach Programme provides basic veterinary care for animals in resource-poor areas. A fully equipped mobile clinic travels between these areas on a regular basis to administer vaccinations, deworming and treatment for minor wounds, in the field. Animals requiring further treatment or sterilisation are brought back to the JSPCA veterinary hospital, in the south of Johannesburg.

In the first week of operation, the JSPCA treated seven medical cases, vaccinated 49 animals and sterilised 15 cats and dogs.

The goal of the outreach department is to reduce the amount of unwanted, abandoned and abused animals and to reduce the risk of the transmission of diseases, such as rabies, between infected animals and humans. This can be achieved through an effective vaccination and sterilisation programme.

As importantly, the Outreach Programme assists owners with information about how to care for their animals properly and emphasises the need for sterilisation.

Dr Puttick said that despite isolated cases of severe neglect and abuse, most of the residents the inspectors encounter love their animals dearly and are always happy to receive information about how to care for them.

“As the veterinarian helping to run this programme, I am incredibly excited about the impact it will have in the community and hope it will continue to grow from strength to strength.”The programme is run in conjunction with underprivileged communities and the long-term trust built up in this way ensures its sustainability,” Puttick said.
