Light of hope

“When I was tested and realised I had HIV I was very wary about taking medications. In fact it was my good friend Jephte, who eventually persuaded me to do so."

WORLD Aids Day was remembered at Thaba Eco Hotel on Thursday, December 1 as guests, staff from Kibler Park Fire Station and the hotel, gathered to pray and listen to guest speakers.

Firefighter Jephte Kabengele welcomed everyone and said by 2030 a goal which he hopes is achieved, is that there will be a zero HIV infection rate.

Guest speaker Gloria Mogotji, a nursing sister who is involved with primary healthcare and HIV/Aids counselling, explained why antiretroviral (ARV) medication has increased the life expectancy of people living with HIV. “When a person is tested and they are HIV positive, irrespective of their CD4 count, treatment will begin immediately. It’s also vital the medication is taken at the same time every single day. Their lifestyle needs to change and blood will be taken once a year to check the viral load.”

Matshidiso Mthembu spoke about her positive journey living with HIV, inspiring the audience with her talk. “When I was tested and realised I had HIV I was very wary about taking medications. In fact it was my good friend Jephte, who eventually persuaded me to do so. In 2005 I found out I was pregnant and also had HIV, so I took ARVs. When my daughter was born she had to have medication administered and after six weeks she was negative. I then decided I knew better and stopped taking all medications but in 2011 I began treatment again. The virus doesn’t control me, I control the virus and presently I’m undetectable. Living with HIV doesn’t mean a person can’t enjoy their life, just live responsibly.

“You mustn’t be afraid to come out but many people living with HIV fear they will be rejected. Love the person who has HIV. My family is extremely supportive.

“Today is a very important day, remembering all those who passed away due to HIV complications. Don’t give up, there’s life after HIV,” said Mthembu.
