Learners become more security-conscious

Hartford College learners left the security educational show revived, energised and educated on basic emergency numbers and safety precautions.

HARTFORD College recently hosted a home safety interactive show, led by well-known Johannesburg entertainer, Darin McDowall, and courtesy of ADT Security.

The Baddies and Buddies show for pre-primary and primary school learners, held at the Mondeor school, focused on bullying, home robberies, keeping belongings safe, stranger danger, respecting fellow South Africans and being alert by paying attention to surroundings, and how to get help from police or press panic buttons.

Darin spoke on these issues in a fun and interactive way, keeping all the learners listening and laughing while getting the message across. He spoke about personal safety, including not putting pills or anything in children’s mouths without asking their parents first, dangers in the kitchen, electricity safety – not touching or pulling plugs, not playing with fire, matches, lighters or candles, the danger of playing with guns, how to behave around dogs and what to do during a home invasion.

The fun-filled show has been successfully rolled out in Gauteng and in the Western Cape to rave reviews from both teachers and learners.

Children are never too young to be educated and made aware, in a non-threatening manner, of the dangers that exist in our society. Darin addressed these pertinent issues in a fun and friendly way. He has found the happy medium as this show keeps the learners both informed and entertained.
