Transformer explodes injuring two at Southgate

Both patients were transported to a private hospital in Johannesburg.

TWO people have been injured following the explosion of a transformer on Wednesday, October 26, in the parking lot at Southgate Shopping Centre.

ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene and immediately found two patients. A man and a woman were working inside the transformer when it exploded. On assessment, paramedics discovered that one of the patients, a man, had sustained burn wounds over most of his body, leaving him in a critical condition while a second patient, a woman, was found with moderate burns to her body.

Paramedics immediately began to treat the patients and provided them with numerous advanced life support interventions. Once treated, the critically injured patient was airlifted by a private medical helicopter while the woman was transported by ambulance. Both patients were transported to a private hospital in Johannesburg.

The cause of this incident is not yet known.
