MEC visits Johannesburg Society for the Blind

The JSB is a nonprofit organisation that caters for the blind and partially sighted persons in Johannesburg.

NANDI Mayathula-Khoza, the MEC for Gauteng Department of Social Development (GDSD), visited Johannesburg Society for the Blind (JSB) in Regents Park to assess the services the centre offers, on Thursday October 20.

The MEC said the visit provided her an opportunity to interact with the management and clients of the institutions, plus to gain first-hand information on issues that affect them on a daily basis. She gave blankets to the residents and promised to help others get bursaries to further their studies.

“As part of our programme of improving the impact we make in communities with our relief efforts, we profile households and NGO’s we fund – to assess our service delivery. This is especially important in the case of NGOs that we fund, because of the resources we deploy in their work. In this financial year alone, the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) through the GDSD, spends about R2,2 billion (48% of total budget of GDSD) on NGO funding,” Mayathula-Khoza said.

The JSB is a nonprofit organisation that caters for the blind and partially sighted persons in Johannesburg. It was founded in 1926 to help civilians who were blinded during World War I. The centre provides accommodation, employment, rehabilitation, orientation, mobility and skills of daily living to the blind.
