Join the Power of Pink Campaign this October

Power Couple SA’s Razia Samson joins the Power of Pink Campaign this Breast Cancer awareness month.

CO-WINNER of Power Couple SA 2015, Razia Samson, is one of three Brand Ambassadors for Reach for Recovery’s Ditto Project, supported annually by the South African Mushroom Farmers’ Association (Samfa), Pick ‘n Pay and Thermopac, through their Power of Pink campaign.

Every October (breast cancer month), Samfa joins forces with Pick n Pay and Reach for Recovery to raise funds for underprivileged women who’ve had mastectomies but can’t afford breast reconstruction for themselves.

“During October, all the mushroom punnets in Pick ‘n Pay go pink. For every punnet sold, Pick ‘n Pay and SAMFA donate R1 to Reach for Recovery. Our goal this year is to raise R500 000,” said Samson, who is honoured and delighted to be one of three spokespeople.“This campaign is about supporting women through the final and empowering step in breast cancer treatment: purchasing breast prostheses. It also encourages people to eat sliced or whole button mushrooms, which have been shown to help reduce the risk of breast cancer,” she said.

Research shows that mushrooms have cancer-fighting potential. Mushrooms could be one of our most powerful allies in the fight against breast cancer.

According to Samson, thAT is a key finding from studies conducted at the Beckman Institute at the City of Hope Cancer Centre in California. The same discovery was made at the University of Australia in Sydney, in collaboration with Zhejiang University in China. Women who eat an average of ten grams of mushrooms a day, seem to half their risk of breast cancer.

“Silicone breast prostheses from Reach for Recovery cost between R950 and R2 000 each. State hospital patients who’ve had a mastectomy and have a hospital registration card, can pay just R80 for these prostheses. This huge price reduction is due to the Reach for Recovery’s Ditto Project, and the price is mainly to cover admin costs. Note that Reach for Recovery doesn’t turn away anyone due to lack of financial resources,” said Samson.

Head to your nearest Pick n Pay, go big on the pink punnets of mushrooms and spread the word. Know that you’ll be supporting those affected by breast cancer, while helping to protect yourself and your loved ones with good-for-you mushrooms.
