Celebrate Older Persons Week with our Golden Oldies

Celebrate our older generations with Older Persons Week from Friday, September 30 to Thursday, October 6.

CELEBRATE our older generations with Older Persons Week from Friday, September 30 to Thursday, October 6.

The United Nations designated an International Day of Older Persons on October 1, 1990.

Each year the United Nations provides the theme for the day, looking at the challenges facing older persons globally during the particular year. All activities during Older Persons Week will focus on this theme.

This is an important day as older people are often the most marginalised and abused people within our society, because they are often unable to defend themselves, be it in terms of sexual abuse, farm murders, abuse at hospitals and old age homes, and even by their own family.

“We cannot allow bad elements to take advantage of our senior citizens,” says Theunis Kotze, general manager for ADT Inland Region, in recognition of International Day of Older Persons. “Criminals often prey on older members of society because they are seen as vulnerable soft targets, so their safety must be highlighted and addressed the year round,” adds Kotze.
