Tireless hard work ensures St Mary’s Home runs smoothly

“It had always been my dream to give the children a surprise treat and to take them on holiday to see the sea and through kind friends of the home this dream came true,” said Sonja.

ST MARY’S Children’s Home’s recent 113th annual general meeting was opened in prayer by dean Maureen Simons and the welcome and introduction was given by advocate Mancha Manaka (chairman of the executive committee).

Director of the home, Sonja Harmse, spoke about the highlights of the year with the best being the great seaside holiday the children of the home enjoyed last December. “It had always been my dream to give the children a surprise treat and to take them on holiday to see the sea and through kind friends of the home this dream came true,” said Sonja.

“There have been hard times this year, with the outstanding municipal account the worst scenario but through faith and continual addressing of the matter, we are hoping a breakthrough isn’t far off.”

Sonja thanked everyone who is involved in the home, either through working, giving or sharing their time. “To our children, you are the reason we are here! Your successes and accomplishments are our rewards,” she added.

Manaka spoke about difficult times the home has been through but added the home has survived all forms of regimes, as far back as the 1910 Union of South Africa, to the current democratic Republic of South Africa.

“I am confident that whatever changes will come, St Mary’s will have to draw on all its survival instincts and adjust. I, therefore view change as strength and a fresh opportunity to survive rather than being a weakness that threatens our existence. I challenge all stakeholders to take a unanimous progressive stand towards ensuring our doors will remain open for many more children in need.”

Honorary treasurer Phil Geyer, gave his report, adding that the home has kept going through generous donors supporting the home and thanked all for their valued contributions. “Praise God we’ve made it through another year and thank you to all who have helped make my job an easier one. The results of the statements never acknowledge Sonja, her staff and her children. Sonja works tirelessly and is absolutely passionate about the home,” Phil said.

The children provided uplifting entertainment at various times throughout the AGM and a new chaplain was welcomed, reverend Denzil Burgon.

The evening ended with refreshments served in the cottages and the children enjoying special time with friends of St Mary’s.
