Greening the South

The children helped to plant a few young trees and potted plants into gardens at the front of Entrance Precinct, just in front of the entrance to the nature reserve.

PLANTING trees and flowers was all part of the fun for schoolchildren from Sathya Sai School in Lenasia, when they visited the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve on Wednesday, September 14, in celebration of Arbour Month.

A group from the Extended Public Working Programme, working under a contractor, who in turn works for Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ), were on hand to assist the youngsters, as well as some members of Johannesburg South Garden Club and the Happy Hobblers walking group.

The children helped to plant a few young trees and potted plants into gardens of the Entrance Precinct, just in front of the entrance to the nature reserve. Tumi Shoba (nature conservationist and manager of the reserve) gave a talk to the youngsters, informing them about Arbour Month and what it entails.

“Planting trees is very important for the environment and these you’ve helped plant today will give our community lots of pleasure as they visit and see them grow,” Tumi said.

The children enjoyed a picnic and later went for a walk in the reserve, while members of the garden club and the walking group had a braai.
