Casual Day celebrated at the Hamlet Foundation
Hamlet Foundation is an NGO based in Johannesburg and their philosophy is to provide an environment and opportunities for children and adults with an intellectual disability.
THE South Hills’ Hamlet Foundation celebrated Casual Day on Friday, September 2, through a fun-filled fundraising sensory baking session that was successful courtesy of the kindness of people.
The objective of the Hamlet Foundation is to develop and empower individuals who are intellectually challenged to achieve their maximum potential, enabling them to lead a normal life as far as possible.
Audrey Farrell, from Accensure, who was part of the initiative, informed the COURIER that baking is one activity where people use many of their senses, namely touch, taste, smell and sight. Audrey and her team combined everything and taught the adults at the centre some baking skills. The initial donations and support received led to the success of this initiative.
“Even if you are not keen on baking, you can still participate by donating baking utensils. We welcome all donations of aprons, oven gloves, baking tins, cooling racks, cutters, food mixers, food processors, measuring jugs and spoons, mixing bowls, rolling pins, scales, spatulas and so forth,”
“If you have other utensils we have not mentioned but you believe will make a difference to those in need, then you are welcome to share them with us. No matter where you are based around Johannesburg, we will send a driver to come pick up the items”
“The theme for this year’s Casual Day was ‘Up Your Game’ and that is why I took the initial donation, the oven, from my family and got other friends and community involved to collect baking aids and ingredients to help make this initiative a success hence, the learners got to experience the baking first hand,” said the caring Audrey.
Audrey and her team have a golden rule: “Do unto others as you would like others to do unto you.” Any contribution, no matter how small it might seem to you, is welcome as it will make a difference in the lives of those in need. For more information please contact Audrey Farrell on 082 412 3342.
