ANC mourns the death of PR Councillor Mthembu

“She fought back, and tried very hard to recover from short breath again, and this time it was quite evident that our comrade was not well”

The ANC mourned the death of one of its PR councillors, Nhlanhla “Stompie” Mthembu (50), who died on Monday, August 22, after collapsing at the Gauteng Legislature during the inaugural meeting of the council.

According to ANC Ward 119 Clr Mangaliso Ngwenya, Nhlanhla, affectionately called Black Diamond, said she was earlier admitted at the Hillbrow hospital on Wednesday, August 17, and was later discharged after some resuscitation.

“Last week Wednesday MaMthembu was troubled by shortness of breath and she was immediately rushed to the hospital where she was stabilised. She recovered, and she was discharged the same night; however, on Friday, August 19, she got some complications at the councillor’s briefing meeting in Newtown, Johannesburg. She fought back, and tried very hard to recover from short breath again, and this time it was quite evident that our comrade was not a 100 per cent well and she actually needed some rest,” Clr Ngwenya.

Since her sudden death on Monday, condolences have been flooding in, including from senior ANC stalwart Paul Mashatile, who was accompanied by Gauteng Premier David Makhura, and the former City of Johannesburg Mayor Parks Tau and other ANC councillors from different ANC wards.

Clr Mthembi will be missed by her beloved husband Bheki, and her children, and the community of Naturena, which served for many years.
