JMPD conducts school road safety campaign

The aim was to remind parents about the importance of road rules and signs.

JOHANNESBURG Metro Police Department (JMPD) conducted a school road safety campaign at Meredale Primary School, corner Sheila and Maureen streets, on Friday morning, July 22.

Also present on the day were the Department of Public Safety and Joburg Emergency Medical Services.

The aim was to remind parents about the importance of road rules and signs.

Officer Thato Phiri informed the COURIER that there are unruly parents who put others in danger, especially on Fridays, and this habit extends to other schools. She added that Meredale Primary temporarily has traffic scholar patrollers to help combat the habit.

JMPD officers also spoke to the learners about pedestrian crossings. Mini ‘driver’s licence’ certificates were issued to the learners.

JMPD chief superintendent Wayne Minaar said the campaign was to emphasise the importance of road safety, the necessity to buckle up and the consequences that littering has on the environment.

City of Johannesburg Transport Department Road Safety reminded the community about the transport values, namely accountability, co-operation, honesty, respect and Ubuntu.
