Three hundred units of blood donated at 70

“Giving is part of who we are and is a generational trait"

JOHN McIntyre (70) generously donated his 300th unit of blood at the Southdale blood bank on Monday, July 18, which was also Mandela Day.

The 70-year old Meredale resident made his way to Southdale where he always donates his blood.

Speaking to the CHRONICLE, McIntyre told his story of how his family has always been generous. “Giving is part of who we are and is a generational trait, my family gives a lot,” he said.

As fit as a fiddle at 70, he says his three children (his dogs) keep him going.

“My dogs wake me up at any hour of the night and I care for them as any parent cares for their child,” he said.

Taking his seat in the recliner to donate blood, McIntyre was very specific who must conduct his donation. Only sister Lethokuhle Hlatshwayo (from SANBS) was allowed to draw blood as he’s very fussy.

McIntyre finished off his donation with a glass of juice and a biscuit.
