Cable theft cause power outages

"The spot where they steal cables is R82 diagonally opposite Eagle Nest Estate."

CABLE thieves are at it again in the South, especially Kibler Park where residents have been in the dark for at least 24 hours almost every week.

Last week, Thursday, June 30, JMPD arrested eight men stealing cables worth R50 000 in Robertsham. They caught them busy cutting the cables.

Ward 125 PR Clr Peter Stewart said the constant cable theft in Kibler Park is now becoming a serious matter: there hasn’t been one week during the last two months that the main cable supply to Kibler Park has not been cut and stolen all at the same spot, time and time again.

“I cannot understand why the City Power has lost control. They need to put security measures in place to prevent this. This type of thuggery not only creates cost for the city running into millions in replacing these cables, but it also creates immense havoc and cost in residents’ and businesses’ daily lives in the area.

“Even City Power officials are getting tired of attending to the constant replacing of these cables,” he said.

Mr Stewart said the spot where they steal cables is on the R82 diagonally opposite Eagle Nest Estate.

Marlon van Wyk from Kibler Park said the area has recently been hit by cable thieves. “We are left without electricity for 24 hours every week. Last week we received news that members of the CPF caught some guys in connection with this. This morning (July 5) we are left without power again due to cable theft. This is now totally out of hand and someone needs to do something about it,” said Marlon.

City Power’s spokespersons Yumna Sheik and Hloni Motloung have been contacted for the way forward on this matter.
