Elderly couples car hit by truck

“I realised my brakes weren’t working as I approached the intersection and began blowing the trucks hooter for the cars to get out of my way. Two managed to move forward through the intersection but one couldn’t get out of my way,” said the truck driver.

A TRUCK driver said his brakes failed as he was coming down Comaro Street, after which he ran into a car at the intersection of Comaro Street and Soetdoring Avenue, Bassonia.

The accident happened at about 11:00 on Tuesday, June 14. “I realised my brakes weren’t working as I approached the intersection and began blowing the truck’s hooter for the cars to get out of my way. Two managed to move forward through the intersection but one couldn’t get out of my way,” said the truck driver.

The two occupants of the silver Hyundai were badly shaken up but otherwise seemed to have escaped unhurt. “I just saw this truck coming and couldn’t get out of the way as there were two cars in front of me,” said the man who was driving. His wife, who was in the passenger seat, said it happened so quickly. “There was a massive bang as the truck hit us and it didn’t stop but carried on down Comaro Street,” she said.

The truck came to rest further down the road from the accident. The driver returned to the accident scene to give his statement to the JMPD (Johannesburg Metro Police Department) officers who arrived on the scene shortly after the accident. EMS was at the scene but left shortly after.

“It’s our 57th wedding anniversary today, and this had to happen to us,” said the visibly shaken couple. A friend of the family came to assist them before their son arrived.
