Mondeor pupil flying high

Zungu, who currently ranks number eight in the country’s under 14 division started playing tennis at the tender age of five and began playing ranking tournaments at the age of nine.

GRADE 9 learner at Mondeor High School, Ntokozo Zungu, recently won her first Tennis South Africa (TSA) Series in the u.14 division and has represented Gauteng Central in South Africa High Schools’ inter-provincials in the u.19 division.

At the inter-provincials, Zungu’s team won the gold medal and she was thereafter selected for the South Africa High Schools Team to tour the United Kingdom in London from June 23 to July 2.

Zungu, who currently ranks number eight in the country’s u.14 division, started playing tennis at the tender age of five and began playing ranking tournaments at the age of nine. The 14-year-old obtained her first provincial colours at the age of 10 and played in the u.12 division where she was then ranked number six in the country. She also won Tuks Junior in u.14 while her sister was a runner-up in the u.10.

Hailing from Naturena, Zungu comes from a close-knit family and is the eldest of three children of Sweetness and Sylvester Zungu.

Speaking to the CHRONICLE, Zungu’s mother, Sweetness said, “Her father is a qualified tennis coach and he is the one coaching her. Ntokozo enjoys playing tennis more than anything. Her hobbies are singing and acting. As her mother, I’m very proud of her and what she has achieved so far. She is an inspiration to her siblings in such a way that they all play tennis. My biggest wish is to see her play in Wimbledon or the US Open one day and make South Africa proud.”
