A trip down memory lane at Gold Reef City

“Visitors will be given the opportunity to learn about the country’s rich history and will be left with a sense of patriotism for our relatively young democracy.”

FREEDOM Day and Worker’s Day are memorable calendar days for South Africans as they commemorate the events that played a major role in shaping the Rainbow Nation.

Gold Reef City is the home of two iconic monuments to history that bring to life the country’s heritage and illustrates the fall of apartheid and the rise of a young democracy.

“Experience South Africa’s distinctive past at Gold Reef City when you take a journey through the Apartheid Museum and travelling the undergrounds of the Johannesburg gold rush,” said Gareth Kaschula, marketing manager at Gold Reef City.

“We invite you to experience the historical world of Jozi’s goldfields and a history lesson that will stick with you for a lifetime,” he added.

Opened in 2001, the Apartheid Museum is acknowledged as the pre-eminent museum in the world dealing with 20th-century South Africa, with 22 exhibition areas. Visitors will be taken through a dramatic emotional journey of the birth and the collapse of a state-sanctioned system based on racial discrimination. This museum serves to educate, inspire and encourage respect among all the different cultures in South Africa.

The Heritage Tour is Jozi’s “Story of Gold” at the Gold Reef City theme park and is a must-visit for all. By descending into the earth in an old mineshaft, visitors will witness the foundations of the city’s history and wealth. The interactive tour also includes traditional gold-panning and seeing a live gold-pour.

“Visitors will be given the opportunity to learn about the country’s rich history and will be left with a sense of patriotism for our relatively young democracy,” said Kaschula.
