Bag your waste

If the excess waste is bagged it will make it easier for Pikitup’s contingency teams on the ground.

PIKITUP has appealed to the Joburg community: residents, business owners, hawkers, schools, motorists, commuters and pedestrians to bag their excess waste, in order to avoid health risks.

If the excess waste is bagged it will make it easier for Pikitup’s contingency teams on the ground to speed up the time spent collecting from bins, street corners and in open spaces.

The city is encouraged by the response from the public who are actively participating in the restoration of the city by cleaning up, continuing to recycle and supporting the contingency teams on the street.

Jacky Mashapu, Pikitup spokesperson, said they are committed to having the recycling and residual waste collected as soon as possible.

“As we continue to intensify our contingency plans, we urge residents to take out their bins during their normal refuse collection day,” he added.

”If we cannot make it on that day, we will endeavour to collect within 48 hours. Should the 48-hour period lapse and your bin has still not been emptied, please return it to your property and wait for your next scheduled collection day.

”We also extend our gratitude to members of various neighbourhood watches and Community Policing Forums, who have been assisting us to facilitate the delivery of waste collection in the city.

”The intervention has helped to ensure that the clearing of illegal dumping and refuse collection is conducted in a safe environment.

“We continue to urge communities across the City of Joburg to call the 24-hour hotline, on 011 286 6009, to request cleaning tools, gloves and bags for community-led clean-ups and removal of bagged waste by Pikitup.

”Illegal dumping can also be logged on the JRA Find & Fix App, which can be downloaded to cellphones for free from the Google Play Store,” explained Jacky.
