ACCORDING to Gauteng Community Safety Traffic Police, road users are not complying with traffic laws. The rate at which road users die is unacceptable and most fatal crashes that have occurred were not supposed to have happened and most should have been avoided.
The factors contributing to the high death toll on the roads are: driving under the influence of alcohol; speeding and not slowing down in wet weather, resulting in vehicles losing control and overturning; and unsafe overtaking, resulting in head on collisions which are mostly fatal.
Drivers are advised to look out for pedestrians and to slow down near crèches, schools, shopping malls and taxi and bus stops. Pedestrians are also asked to refrain from crossing or walking along highways as it is illegal, dangerous and fatal.
