THE Johannesburg South Region of the South African National Parks (SANParks) Honorary Rangers launches the Junior Ranger programme on January 23 at Lenasia, Park Primary School from 08:30.

It has been in existence since 2008 and is made up of members from Lenasia, Robertsham, Mayfair, Roshnee, Alberton and surrounding areas.

Junior Honorary Rangers (JHRs) are volunteers between the ages of 10 and 18 who participate in the Youth Development Programme of the South African National Parks (SANParks).

It is the junior leg of the SANParks Honorary Rangers (SHRs) which has been in existence for 51 years and has a proud tradition of volunteer service to SANParks.

This programme has many benefits for aspiring conservationists, schools and educators.

The programme requires that JHRs attend nine monthly meetings which consist of theory and practical sessions as well as presentations by specialists in certain fields of conservation and nature in general.

This programme is aligned with certain school subjects such as natural sciences, social sciences, life orientation, economic and management sciences which offer the opportunity of gaining practical knowledge on certain topics.

It is a fun way of not only learning about conserving the natural heritage and expanding their knowledge regarding the natural environment.
