Sorrowful state of the South

Illegal dumping issues are reaching an all-time high in the South as residents and builders continue to throw their unwanted rubbish just where they feel like.

JOBURG SOUTH  –  Nivann Govindasamy, a resident of Glenvista who is passionate about the environment and sustainability related issues, has noticed illegal dumping is on the increase in the South. “I undertook some research around the Glenvista, Glenanda, Mulbarton, Liefde en Vrede and Kibler Park areas and I was shocked to see the extent of the problem. It’s absolutely disgusting people feel they have the right to dump their rubbish everywhere. Who do they think will clean it up? Huge fines should be implemented for those who are caught dumping and they should also be named and shamed,” he said.

Amanda Avenue, Glenanda is a “hot spot” dumping ground.

The CHRONICLE has written many articles pertaining to illegal dumping over the past few years and even though local ward councilors try their best to bring the issue to the table at council meetings, nothing seems to deter residents from dumping.

Last month local residents in Liefde en Vrede took it upon themselves to “clean up” but no sooner had they removed the rubbish, it was back again.

Main Street in Kibler Park has its fair share of “dumpers”.

“Building rubble seems to be the main concern throughout all the areas mentioned. Often trucks dump during the night when they won’t be seen. It’s crucial to the environment this has to stop,” added Ward 23 councillor Paul Smit.
