Bowled over

They couldn’t be further apart in age but Sue Kukard (87) and Zilke Venter (21) both play lawn bowls and love it!

ALBERTON – Sue, a young at heart and sprightly woman, has been playing bowls at Alberton Bowling Club since 1996 and enjoys the game so much she tries to play at least twice a week. “It’s a super game and not just for retired people, as so many people think of it. It keeps you agile and fit and I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys a challenge and would like to meet interesting people,” she says.

Recently Zilke joined the same club and took to the game like a fish to water. “I’m new here but it’s exceeded all my expectations. I really thought it was just a game for old people.

“The technique is extremely challenging and I couldn’t walk properly for two days after I played my first game,” laughed Zilke. “It’s great and I’m meeting such interesting people. I honestly never thought it could be such fun,” she said. “Sue is certainly showing me a thing or two.”

The only restrictions for playing lawn bowls is the requirement of flat soled shoes or play with bare feet.

Lawn bowls has been around for hundreds of years and on an interesting note, Sir Francis Drake wouldn’t stop playing bowls when the attack by the Spanish Armada was announced. He lost the game but won the war!
