Awareness: Safety tips during armed robbery

Houses where residents leave their homes in the afternoon to fetch children from school are being targeted.

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – A stern warning has been released by Mondeor SAPS following an alarming spike in house robberies and break-ins in the Bassonia and Glenvista areas.

According to Mondeor SAPS, houses where residents leave their homes in the afternoon to fetch children from school are being targeted.

Communications officer for Mondeor SAPS, Elizabeth Mnguni, advised domestic workers and gardeners to follow these safety precautions:

*Do not allow strangers on the premises without having properly identified the person.

*Do not allow people onto the property when they ask for water or to use the bathroom. No one enters the property no matter what.

*Do not approach strange people at the gate as it’s safer to be inside the house behind locked doors.

*Gardeners working in the garden should always close the gate.

*Never tell anyone that you’re alone in the house.

*Always answer the phone and don’t let the phone automatically leave a message.

*Simply tell callers at the gate or on the phone that your employers are busy right now and do not give them your name or further details.

*Make sure you know if someone is expected at the property. Always check with your employer before they leave whether they are expecting someone at the property.

*There are classes domestic workers and gardeners can attend to be informed about crime trends.
