Safety tips for cyclists in the south

Helpful safety tips for cyclists.

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – In November last year, a Kibler Park man sustained serious injuries to the head when he fell from his bike after a motorist knocked him down on Peggy Vera Road.

After news of the incident hit the CHRONICLE, a resounding call was made by residents for motorists to be on the lookout for cyclists, motorbikes and joggers.

Safety tips for cyclists from the City of Johannesburg:

*Never ride against traffic instead ride with traffic.

*Do not dodge between parked cars, ride in a straight line at least a metre away from parked cars.

*Ride in single file, except when passing.

*Be alert, scan the road and stay aware of your surroundings.

*Always yield to pedestrians.

*Riding on the sidewalk is illegal in the City of Johannesburg.

Motorists are urged to be considerate because cycle lanes are for bicycle use only. Motorists should not park in bicycle lanes as they obstruct bicycle traffic and also risk the lives of cyclists.
