Keeping local history alive

“The area around Alberton and Johannesburg South is rich in history, which should be preserved for future generations.”

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – At the Women of Worth (WOW) meeting held on Tuesday August 18, guest speaker Beverly Small from Alberton Heritage Society, spoke about her enthusiasm for keeping historic buildings from being knocked down.

“Many developers choose to knock down buildings with a history rather than renovating them and keeping history alive, going on to build unsightly townhouse developments. We do need progress and to go forward but not at the expense of losing our identity with the past,” said Beverly.

Beverly, who is also passionate about recycling, spoke about how each household can make a huge difference if they can only recycle their rubbish. “In Tulisa Park we have a company called mpact, who are responsible for recycling paper and plastic. They can be contacted on 011 538 8600 for more information,” she said.

The morning finished with a delicious tea, enjoyed by all the members and guests.
