Help is available for addicts

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – The non-profit organisation, Alcohol and Drug Concerns (ADC) is advocating a way of life free from drug abuse.

ADC is based at 5 Hammond Road, West Turffontein. It was formerly known as South African Temperance Alliance, established in Craddock in 1889. During this time, more and more communities and churches were being negatively influenced by alcohol abuse. As a result, a group of passionate people started educating about the dangers of alcohol use and, to this day, are still doing so.

Charlene Dearling, field and office manager for ADC, has been with the organisation for more than 10 years. She is passionate about the well-being of the youth. “I have visited a lot of primary schools to educate learners about the consequences of using drugs and alcohol in preparation of them moving on to high school and for their future after school,” she said.

ADC’s vision is to have all the youth and adults make informed decisions on substance abuse. They offer preventative education, support groups, rehabilitation on a referral basis, reintegration fitting back into society, lay counselling and youth alive programmes specially designed for building youth leadership.
