Speeding motorists terrorise Glenvista pensioner

Barrier outside pensioner’s home repeatedly damaged by speeding motorists

GLENVISTA – Motorists speeding in Glenvista continue to be a cause of stress for a pensioner whose property is on the corner of Vorster Avenue and Sneeuberg Street.

Over the past two years, there have been six accidents due to speeding motorists losing control of their vehicles and crashing into the protection barrier on the bend.

On June 22, two vehicles collided on the corner, sending a Mini Cooper crashing into the barrier that has been repeatedly fixed by the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA).

Resident Solly George says he has had enough of speeding motorists who continually smash into the barrier outside his home and sometimes through his wall. The delay by JRA to fix the barrier is an issue of dismay for the pensioner.

“They (speeding motorists) come flying around the corner and then my wall is gone. I’ve been in hospital for seven months and I just came out,” said George. He added that he now has to deal with the problem of fixing the damaged protection barrier.

“Every time they go through my wall I have to fix it and I’m a pensioner,” complained George.

Ward 23 councillor Paul Smit said: “The JRA must fix it, but JMPD must come out and do speed control on that road. This is the sixth time in the last two to three years that vehicles have crashed into the barrier and it’s been fixed continually. The solution is not fixing it, the solution is speed control.”

Smit said the JRA were notified at least four weeks ago of the incident and that the protection barrier had to be restored yet again.

On Sunday, April 5, another driver took out the barrier on the same corner. This particular corner is notorious for accidents and the owners of the house have repeatedly asked for traffic calming measures on the bend.
