JRA responds on deadly corner

Winchester Hills residents still waiting for a barrier to be placed at a dangerous corner

WINCHESTER HILLS – On the evening of April 14 CHRONICLE reporter Zesuliwe Hadebe watched as a motorist in a white KIA Optima raced down Xavier Street approaching Marula Cres, Wichester Hills.

This corner, to residents for Marula Crescent, is synonymous with grave danger. According to security officers at a nearby townhouse complex, at least two or three vehicles a week used to nosedive into a koppie on the corner before their intervention.

Residents have placed tree stumps and other illuminating warning signs to indicate danger. Recently, Mthunzi Mtshali nearly plunged to his death at this corner. Fortunately for Mtshali, only his BMW 3 Series was damaged and not his well-being.

JRA Marketing and Communications officer Bertha Peters-Scheepers said: “There have been three accidents captured at this site since 2013 as per the JMPD Crash Management System. These incidents are unfortunate, and JRA will undertake site visits with regard to the warrants for guardrails and the required signage, and ensure implementation of these recommendations. The JRA will also investigate the ‘no dumping’ sign and forward the query to the relevant entity.”

Meanwhile, there are still no chevron signs indicating the sharp bend ahead, and there is not a single sign indicating the legal speed limit on Xavier Street.
