Truck crashes into the Coy’s Service station

Truck narrowly misses petrol pump and crashes into a shop instead, one person was reported injured.

SOUTH CREST – Susan Kay, the manager of the Caltex Service station, explained that she was sitting in her office unit behind the shop. Susan and her work colleagues heard a screeching noise and the next minute the truck was in the shops facility.

Petros Gasa, a petrol attendant, heard the noise and the tyres screeching from the distance. During the time he was busy washing a car in the facility next to the petrol station’s shop on the right. He came out of the building and saw the truck headed towards the petrol station and ran for his life.

Eric Nobewu, another employee, was busy putting petrol in a vehicle and heard the noise as well. When he saw the truck coming in fast, he ran away and saw that the truck had no control before it crashed into the shop.

According to Netcare report:

Upon their arrival on scene, they found that a heavy goods vehicle had ploughed through a service station and came to a standstill against a wall. During the process the heavy goods vehicle also collided with another motor vehicle.

The driver of heavy goods vehicle was found to have sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital after receiving treatment on the scene. The driver of the motor vehicle was fortunate to have escaped with only minor injuries.

Exact detail to the cause of the accident and preceding events will remain the subject of a police investigation.

What about the other vehicle?

Another vehicle was also involved. The truck bumped a car right over onto the passenger’s side.

Alberton resident Theresa Nigtingale, the driver of a Gold Mercedes C180, and her son Alistair Johnson (passenger) were busy filling up at the time around 09:00 at the petrol pump closest to the shop.

She was busy paying the petrol attendant and heard the screech. At that moment, she was confused why everyone was running away and why they weren’t saying anything. The next minute, the screech was so loud and all that she heard was a huge bang. Her vehicle got pushed and then it tipped over onto the passenger’s side.

“My son and I were both in shock and attempted to get out as quickly as possible,” she said.

Alistair explained that his first thought was to get out of the vehicle. He could not open the door and noticed the sun roof above him.

“I told my mom to try and switch on the ignition, but I don’t think she heard me,” he said.

He reached over, switched the ignition and opened the sun roof. They both managed to get out.

“I asked my mom if she was feeling any pain, but luckily we had seatbelts on to keep us safe.”

On the scene Alistair explained that he experienced pain in his left ankle and he had a headache, while Theresa experienced pain in her left shoulder region.
