Voters make their mark

Well before 06:00 on May 7 voters were out queuing in Glenvista, Mulbarton, Glenanda, Bassonia and Liefde en Vrede.

GLENVISTA – Those who ventured out early to vote weren’t disappointed as their wait was not long compared to those who came out after 07:00.

Comaro Valley Nursery School, Glenvista High School, Bassonia Post Boxes, Glenanda Primary School and Lady of Lebanon Maronite Catholic School stations all opened more or less on time.

Most of the voters queuing were in high spirits as they bantered between each other and waited in the long queues. “We are prepared to wait to vote,” said a couple at Glenvista High School, “we are hoping DA will get in in this area, it’s the only party worth voting for,” they continued.

Two young voters, Hayley Olver and Tandy Mounter both 24 years old, were in the queue at Glenvista High School. When asked what they would like to see change in South Africa, they both agreed and said, “We want to see less crime, less corruption and more job opportunities. For young people there are not enough jobs.”

As the day progressed the Comaro CHRONICLE received a phone call from a woman who had voted in Liefde en Vrede. “This morning we overheard ANC supporters offering free T.Shirts for an ANC vote. I complained to one of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) staff and they said they would look into it. We came back later in the afternoon and many people were either wearing or carrying ANC T.Shirts. The CHONICLE reporter questioned one of the young men who was carrying an ANC T. Shirt and asked what he had to do to obtain it. He said, “I went to the ANC tent across from the school and asked if I could have one. I was given one and was asked for my name and contact number.” He wasn’t prepared to discuss it further.

Queues did become less as the day progressed but voters who went to Comaro Valley Nursery School still queued for nearly two hours and it was the same at Glenvista High School.

AS the sun set, some were still in the line, determined to wait it out until they got their turn to make their cross.
