Women’s group which makes a world of difference

Although a local women’s group, Eikenhof Women’s Institute’s members, know their voice is heard internationally and as a “whole” group worldwide they have been instrumental in changing many things.

SUIDEROORD –  Some of the things which they have been involved in achieving are: cats eyes put into roads; reflective yellow tape put around trucks to make them easier to see in the dark; bicycle reflectors introduced for safety; two way mirrors installed where a victim has to identify her rapist; and in the United Kingdom, female circumcision is no longer allowed to take place.

Locally, members of Eikenhof WI, have been involved in assisting homes for babies and the elderly, the Salvation Army and homes for the mentally challenged.

Wouldn’t you be interested in becoming a member of this interesting women’s group and making a difference in people’s lives as well as you own? “We are always looking for new members. Most women have to go out to work but if you are fortunate enough to be a stay at home mom, or a retired woman, and would be interested in joining our group, please phone me on 011 433 8107,” says Joy Boswell, president of the group. Alternatively, phone vice-president, Pat Leech 011 680 1240.

At the April meeting a few visitors also attended and enjoyed listening to the mornings happenings. One of the members, Jean Ross, gave out a recipe for a no bake milk tart, which is very easy to make. “You use Tennis biscuits mixed with melted butter, 500ml milk and 100g milk tart mix, which can be purchased from Mondeor Home Bake in Mondeor. Boil the milk and add the milk tart mix, stir and pour into the biscuit base. Refrigerate for a few hours and serve,” said Jean. Members at the meeting had a taste and agreed, it was indeed, delicious. Long service awards were also handed out to members.

The next meeting will take place on Wednesday May 14 at 09:30 at St Andrews Church hall, 43 Burger Street, Suideroord. Guest speaker, Michelle Pelser will give a talk on Mondeor Community Policing Sector.
